I had never been on a cruise before so I was excited and also nervous for this new adventure. Hyrum took the week off work and stayed with the boys while I took my Mom and Dad on the cruise.
I have to admit, it wasn't the best cruise ever. We spent too much time on the ship and not enough time at the different ports. Once we got off the ship we only had about 3-4 hours in each of the port cities. Not nearly enough time to see and do everything I would have liked. But, with that said, it was a fun adventure and I had a good time with my parents.
We drove down to Venice on Friday November, 18th. It took us about 8 hours to get to Venice. My poor Mom was squeezed in the back of Hyrum's little car the whole way...I felt kind of bad about that but we didn't want to take the big van all the way down to Italy. Once in Venice we had to walk around for a while trying to find our hotel for the night. Venice is one of the most difficult places to find your way around. Lots of canals, small twisty alleyways and buildings make it easy to get turned around.
We finally made it to our hotel room, it was so wonderful to lay down and rest after a long day of traveling!
Saturday, November 19th. The pigeons in Venice are everywhere...all part of the experience:)
It was a very foggy morning but walking around Venice, even in the fog, is beautiful.
My Mom and Dad in front of St. Marks Cathedral
Within the Cathedral is a museum that I wanted to visit. When Hyrum and I were here last Spring with the boys we didn't bother going to the museum so I wanted to check it out this time around. The museum is on the upper level of the Cathedral and the best part was being able to see all the ceiling mosaics up close. It is simply amazing to imagine all the work it must have been to cover the Cathedral ceiling in tiny little tiles the size of your fingernail. This photo shows my Dad and I in front of the horse statues that stand at the top of the Cathedral. These statues are just replicas but the original (4th century BC) horses were in the museum.
Mom and Dad riding the vaporetto to the port where our cruise ship was supposed to be...
We got to the port around 2:30 PM but we found that our ship was not able to dock in Venice due to the fog. We all waited around until 8:00 PM when they got us all loaded on buses for a 2 hour ride to Trieste, Italy, where the ship was waiting. Once in Trieste we had to wait another 2 hours to finally board the ship because they were still unloading passengers from the previous cruise. After a very long wait to get through security we finally got on the ship around 12:30 AM and went straight to bed!
